'Christmas at the Zoo' celebrates national recognition

A USA Today poll found "Christmas at the Zoo" to be the nation's fifth best zoo lights presentation.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The Indianapolis Zoo is celebrating a national title thanks to readers across the country.

A USA Today poll for the best "zoo lights" in the country has Indianapolis at no. 5 with "Christmas at the Zoo."

It's an attraction dating back to 1957. In fact, the Indianapolis Zoo was the first zoo in the nation to hold a holiday light event. All holiday lights at the Indianapolis Zoo are LED.

Despite the history, there is still plenty that is new for 2017, like Santa's Village which includes:

  • Santa's Study — visits with Santa
  • Mrs. Claus' Kitchen — visits with Mrs. Claus and cookie decorating
  • Santa's Barn — visits with live reindeer
  • The Snowflakery mirror maze — a fun area to navigate with wintry scenes
  • Peppermint Twist beverage hut
  • Season's Gifting hut
  • Mistletoe Kisses Gazebo

Animals like seals, sea lions, brown bears, red pandas, and tigers will also be out for visits.

See all the attractions on the Christmas at the Zoo map.
