INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Good morning. Here are five things you need to know today:
1) Firefighters are on the scene of a large apartment fire in the Castleton area. The fire started around 1:30 a.m. on Whipporwill Drive in the Waterside at Castleton Apartments. The fire was so big, multiple drivers called 911 from I-69. Neighbors in the building next to the one that caught fire heard and felt the fire, and helped warn residents to get out. Between that and working smoke detectors, everyone living there got out safely. Two firefighters went to the hospital for dehydration. A third was treated on the scene for a cut. Sixteen apartments were damaged, and at least four families will be displaced. No word yet what started the fire.
2) Metro Police announced this morning they've found the van used in a deadly hit-and-run last week, but they're still looking for the suspect. Investigators say Edgar Benjamin Castillo-Recinos hit 33-year-old Bronson Gooch near 30th Street & Shadeland Avenue on the east side last Wednesday. Gooch was taken to the hospital, but he passed away Friday. Castillo-Recinos was last known to live in the 1800 block of W. Washington Street, but detectives say he hasn't been there for several days. He works for various builders and has been seen on the east side of Indianapolis and in the Carmel area. Anyone with information is asked to call (317) 262-TIPS (8477).
3) Baby Jesse is home from the hospital recovering from his injuries. The 1-year-old's face is still swollen, cut and bruised from the injuries he got at day care Monday. Day care employees say another client's child, a 2-year-old, is responsible, but Jesse's parents aren't convinced. They want to know if there was a worker in the room at the time and if there's proof that a worker isn't responsible.
4) Widespread storms will move in today with cloud cover and rain capping the temperatures in the mid-70s. Chuck Lofton says we have a slight risk for severe weather today with much of Missouri and Iowa looking out for the possibility of tornadoes this afternoon. Another bout of widespread storms emerges late tonight into mid-morning tomorrow.
5) An Indiana 6th district Congressional candidate struggling for attention and money got both yesterday when a stroke of luck brought Jeannine Lee Lake face-to-face with David Letterman. Lake was having lunch with her campaign staff in a downtown Muncie cafe when she "noticed a guy who looked like a casually-dressed Old Testament Abraham" wearing Italian leather shoes. She introduced herself as a Democrat running for Congress and asked for a picture with Letterman for her campaign. According to Lake, Letterman replied “I can do better than that, how about a big wad of cash?” Letterman made a donation on the spot, posed for pictures and moved on. "He was so gracious, bless his heart," Lake said. Win or lose, Lake has a campaign story that will last a lifetime.
