Alex Otti was born on February 18, 1965, in what is now known as Abia State. Otti was born into the household of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lazarus Weze Otti in Umuehim village, Umuru, located in the Ehi Na Uguru Ancient Kingdom in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.

He attended Ngwa High School and Secondary Technical School, both situated in Abia State. During his time in school, he emerged as the top student in his class, achieving outstanding results in the school certificate examinations.

Otti then proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Lagos, solidifying his foundation in economic principles and theories.

Otti has participated in several international courses, such as the executive development programmes offered by the Columbia Business School, Stanford Business School and Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania). Additionally, he completed an executive programme at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.

Otti’s career in the banking sector spans over three decades, during which he held various executive positions in various financial institutions. He rose through the ranks and demonstrated his exceptional strategic planning, risk management and financial analysis skills.

Otti commenced his banking career in 1989 at Nigerian International Bank, a subsidiary of Citibank New York, where he held a position in the operations department. He later transitioned to Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank Ltd., where he worked in both the treasury and financial services unit, as well as the corporate banking division. In 1992, he joined Societe Bancaire Nigeria Limited (Merchant Bankers), a subsidiary of Banque SBA Paris, and advanced to the role of senior manager.

He subsequently joined United Bank for Africa (UBA) as the principal manager overseeing the bank’s corporate banking sector for the entire South Division. He was entrusted with developing the bank’s oil and gas business.

In May 2001, he became an assistant general manager at First Bank of Nigeria, PLC, with a primary focus on expanding the Energy Sector for the bank. In April 2004, he was promoted to the position of deputy general manager and, within a year, he assumed the role of executive director, of commercial banking. He was later appointed as the executive director for the South Directorate, responsible for managing over 140 branches in the South-South and South-Eastern geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

In March 2011, Otti left for Diamond Bank, assuming the role of Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. He played a pivotal role in transforming the bank into one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions. Under his leadership, Diamond Bank experienced exponential growth and gained recognition for its innovative products and customer-centric approach. After completing his initial tenure, Diamond Bank renewed his appointment in March 2014 for an additional three years.

On October 24, 2014, Otti voluntarily retired from his position.

In December 2015, the Court of Appeal in Owerri removed Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party as governor of Abia State and declared Otti the winner of the governorship elections in the state. However, on February 3, 2016, the Supreme Court of Nigeria overturned the decision of the Court of Appeal and upheld the election of Ikpeazu as Governor.

In 2023, Otti once again participated in the gubernatorial elections in Abia State. This time, he entered the ring as a member of the Labour Party (LP). Following a dramatic collation of results on Saturday, March 18, 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Otti as the winner of the governorship election in Abia State. He achieved victory by defeating his closest opponent, Okey Ahiwe, who ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

As announced by the election’s Returning Officer, Professor Nnenna Oti, the candidate representing the Labour Party obtained a cumulative tally of 175,467 votes, surpassing the main rival, Ahiwe of the PDP, who secured a total of 88,529 votes.

Otti’s entry into politics injected a fresh perspective into the political landscape, inspiring other professionals to participate actively in nation-building.

PS: Days after this article was written, a Federal High Court sitting in Kano, Kano State, nullified the election of Otti as Abia State governor. The Labour Party has indicated plans to appeal the ruling in court.
