John Wayne Bobbitt became famous in the United States and the world over as the man who got his penis sliced off by his wife one drunken night in Manassas, Virginia. The case is even more famous now, especially after the release of Amazon Prime's 'Lorena', but the man is probably not too happy with how it has portrayed him. It all started one night after spending time with his friend drinking. The then 26-year-old went home to his wife, Lorena, and then said that he felt a tugging sensation in his groin.
The stupidly drunk man would realize in some time after that that his then 24-year-old wife had sliced off his penis with a 12-inch knife that she took from their kitchen when she went to drink water in the middle of the night. The fateful day was June 23, 1993.
The entire incident seemed to make audiences in the country wonder what actually happened and who was really the victim. But the real question that stuck to everyone's mind after watching Lorena was, what happened to John Wayne Bobbitt?
Before Lorena went on trial for malicious wounding, John had to go on trial for marital rape. He was acquitted of the crime but this wouldn't be the last that authorities saw John. While Lorena's malicious wounding trial took a more sensational turn in the courtroom, John's life became that of a tabloid star.
He regularly appeared on talk shows and was a recurring guest on Howard Stern. Stern used the man to his full advantage by making him the star of a New Year's Eve Special that year.
A giant penis could be seen on the show being stroked suggestively by a topless female model in order to show how many funds were raised. Reports came in that the money raised with the stunt was $260,000. In spite of all this money that he now had, John didn't pay for the surgery that was performed on him the night his penis was reattached.
One thing was clear, though. John loved to be in the spotlight. He formed a rock band called Severed Parts and even signed t-shirts that showed a caricature of his wife holding a knife. The band was a massive flop but John was never known as a man who could hold down a job.
Then, in 1994, a pornographic autobiography called 'John Wayne Bobbitt: Uncut' became a huge success on VHS. It is allegedly the grossest highest grossing adult movie of all time but his most notorious film during his stint as a porn star was the one called 'Frankenpenis'.
Porn Legend Ron Jeremy had given John's penis the nickname and the man even went for a penis enlargement surgery just for the film.
In an interview that he gave shortly after the release of the film, John said: "I thought it’d be like a perfect penis… now it’s a pathetic penis." The man thought he had a real future as a porn star but then almost missed the world premiere of his own film since he was serving time behind bars for battering his ex-fiancé, Kristina Elliott. He also had a grand larceny charge.
In spite of all the charges, convictions, witness testimonies, and photographic evidence, John has always maintained that he is innocent of all the assault charges that were laid out against him. John says in the docu-series: "I never used violence against another person, pretty much ever. There are probably a lot of women who are legitimately victimized by men, alcoholics, abusive guys."
He added, "But there are women who are opportunists, gold diggers who use you as a stepping stone to advance their career. Just like the immigrant who marries a guy [for a green card (a claim he’s made against Lorena)], they can do the same."
