Profile

A hard-hitting wicket keeper-batsman, Chandimal has displayed some match-winning knocks and attracted the cricketing world’s attention. Many in Sri Lanka see Chandimal as a player for the future who has the potential to adjust his style for all forms of the game.

He follows the footsteps of  Romesh Kaluwitharana for his aggressive batting and keeping style. He was a prolific batsman in school and college cricket. His constant uplifted game earned him a place in the Sri Lankan U-19 team where he showcased a century against the Indian Under-19 unit. He scored another century against the England Cricket Under-19 team which earned him a spot in the Under-19 World Cup that was played in Kuala Lumpur.

His best days came when he scored a century in a three-day match against a New Zealand team. His first breakthrough came against India when he scored his maiden ODI century.

Chandimal withstood Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Jacques Kallis, and Marchant de Lange against South Africa in 2011, and notched up the fifties in each innings to play the supporting act with perfection.

He was honored with the Emerging player of the year award in September 2012. During the same year, he went to become Sri Lanka’s youngest captain, deputizing for a regular skipper, Angelo Mathews, for the first two ODIs against South Africa. Chandimal also led the T20 side.

But his persistent poor form in 2014 did not go down well with the selectors, and he was dropped from the 15-man squad in July 2014 for the Pakistan Tests.  He was then recalled to the team for the last two ODIs against England in December of the same year. He scored an unbeaten 55 in the final ODI as the Lankans made a good total of 302 runs.

In 2015, he came forward with a brilliant inning of 162 runs – 16 fours and four sixes in it. He registered himself in the record books with five consecutive 50+ scores in ODIs – bagging the fourth Sri Lankan title to do so.

Another addition to his achievements was his tenth Test century which made him the fastest Sri Lankan to get to that mark – getting there in only 80 innings.
