A win for the Pittsburgh Steelers in their 2nd round preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars might have been too close for comfort, but some individual performances present good tidings for the team. Out of all of them, Kenny Pickett was one person whose performance may cement a starting role on the roster, and that too at the QB.
Pickett completed 6 out of 7 passes attempted, and a touchdown that was equally impressive, capping a 63-yard sprint down the field in under 42 seconds. With him being replaced in the second half, this near-perfect performance would give anyone a quarterback dilemma to deal with. Anyone but Mike Tomlin.
Mike Tomlin did not give away anything regarding Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback situation
There is still time to make a decision, and it is very clear that someone as cautious as Mike Tomlin would not rush to declare a player as their future, especially if that future still happens to show signs of being wobbly. There certainly won’t be any changes in the starter list being made by him only on the basis of one good preseason game.
“We’ll address depth chart-related things over the next couple of days as we zero in on our next opportunity” Tomlin was quoted as saying. Clearly, the Steelers coach is in no hurry to name the entire lineup just yet.
Pickett’s performance in the game has brought several accolades his way. His explosive pace matched that bludgeoning quality and an eye for touchdown passes that can rival that of some famed Qb starters in the league. It is clear that he has it all, and that is certainly a shot in the arm for the Steelers.
Tomlin and his staff are sure to continue their round of evaluations, based on player fitness and performance. There are, as such, bound to change, some severe and some not so, in the coming weeks and months. But, one thing has become increasingly clear, if this performance is anything to go by, then Pickett is finally here, and he’s here to stay.
