Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree is set to introduce many new characters to the game, as fans got to see some of them during the first trailer launch. However, out of all of these, the introduction of a particular new character has been the center of the limelight ever since the trailer came out.
The trailer introduced Messmer who has resemblances to many other important characters in the game. This gave rise to many speculations by fans attempting to tie his link with the game’s lore.
One prominent speculation about Messmer is that he is the third child of Marika and Radagon. This then makes him the brother of Miquella and Malenia. Messmer might have been abandoned because he is the third child and the number three is associated with a bad omen. However, a new Elden Ring theory disapproves of this speculation.
Messmer is related to an Outer God from Elden Ring
Elden Ring fans will be very much aware of the Outer Gods as they have a very important place in the game’s lore. These Outer Gods are known for not inhabiting the Lands Between in physical form, but they very much influence the events and narratives of the Lands Between.
Among all these Outer Gods, the most prevalent in the Elden Ring lore is the Formless Mother. The Formless Mother is also popularly known in the lore as the “Mother of Truth”, and is known for the love of wounds.

According to a particular Elden Ring Messmer theory, it is believed that the Impaler might be an avatar of the Formless Mother. This theory is based on the fact that, as the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer introduces Messmer, the first sentence he speaks is,
“Mother, wouldst thou truly Lordship sanction, in one so bereft of light?”

The theory suggests that by calling out ‘Mother’, Messmer is giving a reference to the Formless Mother, who is known to influence the events of the Lands Between.
Messmer is associated with Mohg from Elden Ring
This theory also points in the direction that Messmer and Mohg might have a relation in the game’s lore. This is because the Formless Mother is also known for her association with Mohg, as she granted him the boon of Blood Incantations (weapons), giving him the name Lord of Blood.
The DLC trailer shows Messmer to be surrounded by snakes and holding a powerful spear, but it is hard to miss out on the fact that his main power might be his ability to manipulate a unique form of fire. This unique form of fire is closely associated with Mohg’s Bloodflame which was granted to him by the Formless Mother.
Therefore this theory points in the direction that Messmer has a close relationship with the Formless Mother and Mohg, who together may have the desire to take over The Lands Between.
