Gay advocates say the Evansville City Council's amendment of the city's municipal code to include provisions against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity will make the community more diverse and attractive to business.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports age, sexual orientation and gender identity were added this week to Evansville's nondiscrimination code by a unanimous vote of council members. The nondiscrimination code already had included race, religion, color, disability, ancestry and national origin.

The ordinance provides for equal opportunity for all citizens in the areas of education, employment, access to public conveniences and accommodations and the purchase or rental of real property.

Tri-State Alliance President Wally Paynter says his organization had worked with the city's Department of Human Relations to make the changes.
