Fans Refuse To Let Glasgow’s Willy Wonka Fiasco Rest After Appearance of a “Sad Oompa Loompa” in the Event as Organizers Try To Save Face

Willy Wonka from Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, recently took part in an event that was far from his usual world of extraordinary treats.

The ‘Willy’s Chocolate Experience’ that started on Feb. 24 in Glasgow, Scotland, has been called off. This event was tied to the release of the new movie Wonka.

Children dressed as Willy Wonka characters were let down when they attended the event that promised a fun day but didn’t deliver. The promising chocolate-filled wonderland turned out to be unprofessional, leaving both the kids and their parents upset.

Guardians demanded for refund of the £35 ($44) they had shelled out for those disappointing tickets. Adding to the disappointment, attendees were met with a sad-looking Oompa Loompa, which didn’t sit well with fans.

Even after more than five days, fans are unwilling to forget about the Willy Wonka event disaster—particularly after seeing a photo of the unhappy Oompa Loompa actor making waves online.

‘Sad Oompa Loompa’ at Willy’s Chocolate Experience Sparks Outrage Among Fans

As per the official website of the Willy’s Chocolate Experience, its recent event was advertised as “a day filled with laughter, joy, and the irresistible allure of chocolate.” But attendees were left with more frowns than smiles.

The event, put together by the London-based House of Illuminati, was meant to have “whimsical performances” and “surprises at every turn” as part of “a celebration of chocolate in all its delightful forms.”

According to reports from the BBC, attendees spent £35 (approximately $44) to join the event in Glasgow on Sunday. However, upon arrival, they were surprised to find out that it didn’t match the description they were given.

Stuart Sinclair, who took his children to the event, called it an "absolute shambles of an event" on Facebook.

What’s more shocking is that the viral images of the event only show a big warehouse with hardly any decorations. Among the many photos from the Wonka event mishap, one caught everyone’s eye.

It features an actor in an Oompa Loompa costume. She looks unenthused, standing in a smoky room with a table full of scientific equipment—a setup that people on X likened to a “meth lab.”

The actor was none other than Jenny Fogarty, hired to play an Oompa Loompa. In a recent interview with Vulture, Fogarty said she got a 15-page script the night before the event.

Her costume was the “inappropriate” Oompa Loompa and not the kid-friendly one she expected. When asked by the outlet “Were you shown the costumes that day? The set?,” she replied:

Given the amount people were paying to go and the amount they were paying us, I thought they’d have sufficient costumes. They said they were going to be working through the night or whatever, so I just assumed it was going to be a lot better.

But when she showed up at the event, the costume given to her was “so inappropriate for what it was. It was just strange, and they were really cheaply made. It was almost like they were secondhand.” Check out some supportive fan reactions:

Actor and comedian Paul Connell made TikTok videos saying he was hired to play Willy Wonka at an event. He felt sorry for people who bought tickets. He got a 15-page script full of nonsense generated by AI. They told him to give kids one jelly bean and a bit of cheap lemonade.
