Gary, Ind., March 25 - Saturday marks Dozier Allen Junior's first full day on the job as Gary's mayor following Thursday's resignation of the city's long-time leader, Scott King.
Seventy-five-year-old Allen was sworn in Friday as acting mayor to replace King, who resigned after 11 years in office.
King has said he resigned because his $107,000 salary wasn't enough pay for his children's college education.
Allen previously ran for mayor in 1975 and again in 1991.
He will now serve as acting mayor for about a month. Then, Democratic precinct committeemen will meet for an election.
Allen says he will be a candidate.
