Movement
In Wonderland, there are three moves that will be of great use to get around: Jumping, Floating and Shrinking.
There are two ways to jump in the game - a quick jump, and a high/long jump. Quicking tapping will allow you to perform a quick jump. Holding
will perform a high/long jump. In mid-air, you are able to jump up three more times. This is known as Twirling. Twirling is necessary when crossing large gaps. In some instances, the gap may be too large, so Twirling will need to be combined with Floating.
Floating is performing by holding when in mid-air. You'll slowly lose height as you travel in the direction you jumped to. In order to continue floating, you will need to twirl.
Shrinking is by far the most important move in the game, as it will help you when you are lost, or when you need to find certain things. Shrinking is done by holding . To get into small areas like keyholes, you'll need to shrink Alice. When you've shrunk down, you'll have the special Shrink Sense which allows you to view hidden graffiti on the walls. It can also uncover hidden platforms and bridges. These hidden platforms/bridges will always be there, but you will only be able to see then when Alice is shrunk down. While she's shrunk down, she cannot jump, float or attack enemies.
Health
Dying isn't a bad thing in this game, as you don't really get punished for it. If you happen to die, you'll be transported back to the last place you stood. Everything will revert back to how it was before you died. Any teeth or bottles that you pick up (and then proceed to die) will still be retained.
More permanent death occurs if you die while in a battle. The game will then ask you if you want to continue. If so, you'll go back to the last place the game saved. Dying this way will mean you need to recollect everything that wasn't saved.
Health is indicated by a rose and rose petals. The health bar is at the top left of the screen. There is a chance that enemies will drop roses when they are defeated and you are hurt. These will replenish your health.
Painting a rose red and completing a chapter in the game will add another rose to the health meter. In order to paint a rose red, you'll need to complete four Radula Rooms, meaning you can gain an additional 4 health roses through completing Radula Rooms.
If you are hurt enough to reach your last health rose, Alice can then use Hysteria (during your playthrough, you'll only want to use Hysteria once). Hysteria allows you to deal more damage to enemies, while not receiving damage. Hysteria only lasts for a short amount of time, and any enemies killed while in Hysteria will not drop any teeth.
Combat & Weapons
There are five weapons in the game, and four of them can be upgraded (with teeth) to become more powerful. White teeth are worth one, and gold teeth are worth five. You can upgrade weapons via the pause menu.
Vorpal Blade
This is obtained in Chapter 1, and it's your basic melee weapon. The upgrades increase the power, attack speed and the attack combo of the Vorpal Blade.
- Level 1: 0 Teeth
- Level 2: 150 Teeth
- Level 3: 675 Teeth
- Level 4: 800 Teeth
Pepper Grinder
This is obtained in Chapter 1 and is a machine-gun type weapon, which you crank to fire pepper at enemies at any distance. You'll only be able to use it for a short while before it overheats, so you'll need to wait for it to cool down before you can reuse it. It's a great weapon for dealing with enemies, and you use it to collect Snouts. The upgrades allow for faster firing and taking longer for it to overheat.
- Level 1: 0 Teeth
- Level 2: 475 Teeth
- Level 3: 575 Teeth
- Level 4: 700 Teeth
Clockwork Bomb
This is obtained in Chapter 1, and can be used as a remote detonated or time explosive. If you throw one of these bombs, you'll need to wait 17 seconds for it to explode, or you can detonate it by pressing again. The Clockwork Bomb can be used to distract weak enemies, and the explosion will not harm you. This weapon cannot be upgraded.
Hobby Horse
This is obtained in Chapter 2 and is a "smashing" weapon. It's best used to weaken defenses and attack underground enemies. You can use the Hobby Horse to open breakable walls and doors. Upgrading the Hobby Horse increases the damage and size of the area on the smashes.
- Level 1: 0 Teeth
- Level 2: 500 Teeth
- Level 3: 625 Teeth
- Level 4:775 Teeth
Teapot Cannon
This is obtained in Chapter 3 and is another long-range weapon that fires grenades. You can hold to charge each grenade, which will increase the damage dealt. But it will also increase the heat of the cannon. If the Teapot Cannon overheats, it will become unusable for a short period of time. Upgrading the Teapot Cannon will let you fire more before it overheats, and increases the amount of damage done by grenades.
- Level 1: 0 Teeth
- Level 2: 525 Teeth
- Level 3: 600 Teeth
- Level 4:725 Teeth
The combat in Alice: Madness Returns isn't too difficult to get to grips with. You'll face a number of enemies, both easy and hard, along the way. The game allows for auto-aiming, which can be detrimental when up against a large group of enemies. This usually happens when you're up against a major boss. Using a long-range weapon, like the Pepper Grinder or Teapot Cannon allows you to use a precision aiming. It pretty much gives you a third-person shooter type of view. Melee weapons don't require aiming.
In terms of defense, you are able to dodge and block. To dodge, tap . You'll have successfully dodged because Alice will turn into butterflies and move in the direction you gave. Against larger enemies and bosses, they can sometimes slow down before a big attack, giving you time to dodge. Blocking is effective against weaker enemies, but against stronger enemies, Alice will be knocked back. In order to block, you must hold
and
. If Alice is knocked back, she will be open to being attacked for a second. For projectile attacks, it is possible to deflect them back at the enemy that fired it. In order to do this properly, the block must be right before the projectile would hit Alice.
Note about Memories
While the only way to see if you've missed any Pig Snouts, Radula Rooms and Bottles is to look at the Chapter Select page, there's a more in-depth way of seeing if you've missed any memories.
From either the main menu or pause menu, go to Memories. You'll see a number of icons on the left side - in the game, the memories are split into various types. If you select one of these icons, you'll be able to see the missing Memories from each chapter.
