Guide for Red Dead Redemption

undead

Tired of all the multiplayer achievements in the other DLC's? No worries as the Undead Nightmare DLC brings 14 new single player missions along with 10 single player achievements and 2 multiplayer achievements. In this DLC, zombies have taken over the Wild West. Your task is to find out why and put a stop to it. This is one of the best DLC's around and the best for this game.

The DLC is described as 'The Undead Nightmare Pack features an entirely new single-player campaign that follows John Marston as he tries to find a cure for the highly-infectious undead plague spreading across the frontier. In addition to this epic single-player adventure, the Undead Nightmare Pack also features a brand new multiplayer mode in addition to new gameplay mechanics, weapons, undead animals and mythical creatures.'

You can find the DLC for this on this page of the Xbox Live Store.

It also available as a stand alone disc and is also included in the Game of the Year Edition. Both discs have the Liars and Cheats Pack & the Legend and Killers Pack included.

The DLC consists of:

  • 14 Single Player Missions
  • 4 Challenges
  • 15 Missing Persons (instead of Bounty Targets)
  • Undead Animals
  • 22 random encounters
  • Mythical creatures
  • Secret location
  • 5 new weapons (also available in Multiplayer)
  • 3 new outfits
  • 8 Multiplayer skins
  • 2 Multiplayer game modes

It can be started from the main menu once the game has loaded. I highly advise completing the main game's storyline and stranger missions first before playing this DLC as there are some spoilers that may be shown to you in the DLC. The DLC does not chronogically fit in with the base game. Unlike the main story, some missions require completion of stranger missions before progressing with the main story.

Single Player

Before starting with the story walkthrough. I'd like to bring this achievement to your attention.

It is not missable but while completing the storyline, you might be only a few towns away from having all of them saved at a time. Towns can get overrun again after you've saved them. You should get a notification if this is the case. There are in fact 23 locations which need to be safe, but Fort Mercer, Casa Mugrada and El Presidio can't get overrun. This leaves 20 locations which you need to save. To save a town simply kill all undead zombies.

In West Elizabeth (4 locations), the towns are: Blackwater, Cochinay, Manzanita Post and the Pacific Union R.R. Camp.

In New Austin (8 locations), the towns are: Armadillo, Gaptooth Breach, MacFarlane's Ranch, Plainview, Rathskeller Fork, Ridgewood Farm, Thieves Landing and Twin Rocks.

In Nuevo Paraiso (8 locations), the towns are: Agave Viejo, Chuparosa, El Matadero, Escalera, Las Hermanas, Nosalida, Tesoro Azul and Torquemada.

TIP: Along the way you may see a blue circle on your map and a message saying "a mythical creature has appeared in the area". It is one of the Four Horses of the Apocalypse. Using these throughout the DLC makes the game a lot easier in comparision to using the Undead Horse. You need to lasso and break the horse, just like you would with a standard horse.

Story walkthrough

I will try and avoid spoilers as much as possible, but no promises are made.

All missions are located at the 'U' icon on your map/hud.

1. Love in the Time of Plague

This mission is an introduction to the DLC story. Jack Marston returns home to his family. In the first night he gets back, Uncle infects Abigail, and in turn, she infects Jack. This leaves John to get help in Blackwater. Most of this mission is watching the scenes unfold. You need to shoot Uncle in the head, hogtie Jack & Abigail, and then ride to Blackwater to find help.

Unlocks: Cowboy Outfit; Rancher Outfit; Duster Coat; Mexican Poncho; Union Suit; Double-barrelled Shotgun; Cattleman Revolver; and Lasso.

Burn the 7 coffins (yellow dots), and clear the graveyard of zombies by either hitting them with the torch or shooting them in the head (in the chest or legs works as well but this takes more bullets.) Each coffin that is set alight will also reward you with ammo.

TIP: you can search dead bodies for bullets.

After the graveyard is cleared of zombies, you will need to assist the remaining survivors in Blackwater. Search nearby chests to find sniper ammo. You can give this ammo to the survivors, or kill the remaining undead yourself. The undead which will pop up as red circles on your hud after a short while. Once the Town Safety Meter is filled, the town is saved. Green dots will then appear on the map. These are ammo caches that you can now access.

Now, let us focus on tieing up the loose ends. We will focus on the ones in bold.

Once we have all loose ends, the following achievement will unlock:

  • 14 Missions. Main story and Stranger Side Missions.
  • Saved all 20 towns at least once, not concurrently. Spinning Plates requires it to be concurrent.
  • Cleared the 5 graveyards. All 5 are done during missions.
  • Save all 15 Missing Persons. Some places state 16 but the Social Club list it as 15 as the first is a mission.
  • 4 Challenges. Undead Hunter; Undead Treasure Hunter; Undead Sharpshooter; Four Horses of the Apocalypse.
  • Break the Unicorn.
  • 3 Outfits. This will unlock when doing the other requirements.

Rockstar’s Social Club has a checklist which you can use to sync your account with and check what you are missing:

Missing Persons

There are two locations where this side task can be started: Fort Mercer and El Presido. Fort Mercer has 9 people missing and El Presido has 6.

NOTE: If the location is in a town (e.g. Armadillo), the town must be cleared of Undead first.

Each task follows the same order:

1. Start the task by approaching the poster and taking the poster down.

2. Head to the last known location of the missing person

3. Kill some undead attacking the missing person

4. Let the missing person climb onto your horse and ride back to the safe zone (either Fort Mercer or El Presido depending on where the poster was posted).

5. Kill the undead outside the safe zone. Return the person to their family and friends.

There is no need for me to detail each task as they are all very similar. I will list the names and locations of those who are missing.

Fort Mercer

  • Mintie Cummings (Riley's Charge)
  • Winona Picket (Lake Don Julio)
  • Grover Boone (Venter's Place)
  • Silas Gaskell (Critchley's Ranch)
  • Willis Lassiter (Benedict Point)
  • Chu Fook (Gaptooth Breach)
  • Orison Pratt (Ridgewood Farm)
  • Willie Oats (Plainview)
  • Adrienne Lachance (Armadillo)

El Presido

  • Porfirio Gutierrez (Roca de Madera)
  • Ramon Alvares (Torquemada)
  • Lydia Morales (Las Hermanas)
  • Rafael Carillo (Agave Viejo)
  • Santiago Valenzuela (El Matadero)
  • Merche Coronado (Casa Mudrugada)

Challenges

You may have completed some ranks already through normal game progression.

Four Horses of the Apoclaypse

  • Ranks 1 - 4 are the same. You need to find and break the four horses - War, Death, Famine and Pestilence.
  • War can often be in New Austin, around the Gaptooth Ridge area in particular.
  • Death: he is awarded to you after completing the storyline if you have not captured him already.
  • Famine: Nuevo Paraiso or Tall Trees.
  • Pestilence: West Elizabeth areas.
  • Rank 5: Using Death, kill each type of Undead. You can head to El Presido and you shall find many Undead that you can ride Death into.

'All 4 Horses of the Apocalypse.' uploaded by Itzz Sh0wt1m3 Today at 18:32

Undead Sharpshooter

  • Rank 1: Kill 5 Undead in 10 seconds using a gun. El Presido is the place to go. Use Deadeye if neccesary.
  • Rank 2: Headshot 10 Undead in a row. Again, El Presido is your destination. Use casual aim if you are struggling with this.
  • Rank 3: Kill 5 flaming Undead in one Deadeye meter. Use Phosphorus. Enter Deadeye and get the 5 headshots/ You can do this *on a group of Undead outside El Presido.
  • Rank 4: Kill one of each undead types in one Deadeye meter. Again, El Presido is your destination.
  • Rank 5: Get 5 undead sniper kills in 8 seconds (without using Deadeye). Stand next to a cannon at El Presido and snipe away. Look for a group of Undead.

Undead Hunter

  • Rank 1: Kill 100 Fresh Undead and 25 Bolters. Use the cannons at El Presido.
  • Rank 2: Kill 25 more Bruisers and 15 more retchers. Same as above.
  • Rank 3: Use a single explosion of a Retcher to kill 2 more Undead. Look for a retcher outside El Presido and snipe one that is close to a few others. If that is not working, use Undead Bait to bunch a few together,
  • Rank 4: Kill 2 Undead bears, 5 Undead wolves, and 3 Undead cougars using a torch. Not as hard as it sounds. Head to Tall Trees while riding any Horse of the Apocalypse excpet Death. They may still knock you off but very rarely. They cannot kill any of these horses.
  • Rank 5: Find and kill the Chupacabra. Head to Mexico. It can be found anywhere in their wild, especially NW of Torquemada. When you have found it, a blue circle will appear on your radar/map along with the message "A mythical creature has appeared in the area". It is very quick so either snipe it from a distance or use Deadeye when close.

Killing the Chupacabra will also unlock an achievement:

Undead Treasure Hunter

The first part of this challenge is triggered after completing a random event. There are 4 random events you can find the first Treasure map at

  1. There is a the doctor who is shooting a Gatling Gun at an Undead horde. After killing the Undead, capture him a 'living' Undead and then return it to him. After, open the chest next to the Gatling. He may become hostile if you have not brought him his specimen first.
  2. A man who has Undead wife tied up at a campsite. Again, in a chest. He may become hostile.
  3. A man eating Undead at a campsite. The map is in a chest. He may become hostile.
  4. In Tanner's Reach. A survivor is shooting some Undead. Head towards the cabin and kill the Undead inside. Their are two chests. Only one can be opened.

I think the best way for this challenge is to watch the video. A visual guide is far better than a written one in this circumstance. Each treasure is hidden in a chest under a small pile of stones.
Here is a video that shows the locations of each:

However, I will give some text detail as well for those who want that.
  • Rank 1: North of Pike' Basin. Look on your map for a dead end trail that goes just outside the map. The best to get there to follow the train track until you reach the tunnel. Now, head over the tunnel and climb up the snowy mountain.
  • Rank 2: SE of Coot's Chapel, on the cliffside.
  • Rank 3: NW of the Scratching Post. It is in between the two rock formations.
  • Rank 4: South of Sepulcro, in between the palm trees.
  • Rank 5: On the mountain edge between Casa Madrugada and Agave Viejo. It is at the end of the path.

Completion of all of these challenges will unlock the Legend of the Apocalypse/Undead outfit and an achievement:

Unicorn

Now we have have completed the challenges, let us move on to the Unicorn.

It spawns around Mexico, usually Torquemada and Diez Coronas. When you have found it, a blue circle will appear on your radar/map along with the message "A mythical creature has appeared in the area". You will see a white horned horse with a trail of butterflies. Like any other horse, lasso it and break it in. Once that is completed, you will have unlocked:

As you have also completed the outfits whilst working on the rest of the tasks, you will have completed the single player part of this DLC and awarded with:

Multiplayer

This DLC only brings two multiplayer achievements.

The first one is Kingpin. I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED boosting this achievement. Just getting in a game where 8+ other randoms are is very hard to start with. You also need to kill all of these 8 while claiming a piece of land. If you've got the Legends and Killers DLC, I also recommend using Pig Josh as your character while getting this achievement as you can get 8 kills with dynamite.

Either join a session or create one.

You need at least 9 people to unlock this. Set it up for 1 hour and you should be done within 30 minutes. Due to the amount of people you need, it may be best to use game chat rather than a party chat.

Once you have everyone in a Private Normal Free Roam session, head to the Armadillo Saloon. Make sure no-one is in your Posse as you cannot kill Posse members. Get everyone to stand in a group outside and kill them (a stick of dynamite will kill them all).

The next person should then go up to the pole and claim it by pressing the corresponding button. That person then kills the other 8. Repeat until all have the achievement. You will have 3 minutes to get as many people done as possible. After the time runs out, head to another town that has a Land Grab available (Blackwater, Chuparosa, Escalera, Las Hermanas, MacFarlane's Ranch, Thieve's Landing).

The other multiplayer achievement requires you to complete round 14 in Undead Overrun. Each round brings a new waves of zombies, and after they're killed, the round is over. The game also ends once the time has passed out. First of all, some tips:
- Use casual aim.
- Shoot the zombies in the head to save bullets.
- Once a coffin appears immediatly burn it down.
- Work as fast as possible since there is a time limit on a game. You can get extra time by burning coffins and clearing rounds.
- Use dynamite and holy water on a group of zombies to maximize the impact. Groups of zombies are easy to "create" by using undead bait.
- Play with 4 players and keep it like that, survive one of your mates as soon as possible or cover someone else so they can revive the downed person.
- Don't get too close to the zombies but rather kill them with a little distance between the zombies and you, so they can't hit you. (with exception of Retchers, who spit poison at you.)

There are different classes you can choose. Some people suggest that the Long Shot class is best but in my opinion you can just choose the class that suits you best. As mentioned before, the achievement description says round 15 but you'll unlock the achievement if you make it to round 14. There is little need for a session as it is easily done with randoms.

Congratulations on completing the Undead Nightmare! Time to wake up!
