Guide for The Ascent - Story

Overview

Because the last three missions are relatively short and naturally follow each other, I decided to group these together. You can use this overview to quickly go to the desired mission.

Board Meeting

Board Meeting

New objectives: Reach the boardroom & Override the lock

Since the AGI has lifted the lockdown, the door to the boardroom is now unlocked. Head through it and pick up the skill point. Authorize the terminal to unlock the next door and enter the boardroom to trigger a cut-scene and subsequently the next boss fight.

💀 Boss fight: 438 Hung 💀

Hung

The fight pits you against Hung including his left hand and right hand. Like always, focus on his hands first. If you haven't unlocked Extreme Overcharge previously, this is also a great place to get it. Like before, equip the Joyrun Dragon augmentation and inflict stasis on one (or both) of 438 Hung’s minions. Then use your best weapons and/or abilities to inflict more than 4,000 stasis damage to unlock it. With this tactic, they should both go down quite easily. This leaves Hung, which is basically a stronger Hammerhand. His overhead hammer attack goes in three directions, however, so be careful when evading this. In addition, he can fire homing missiles which you can destroy. Nevertheless, he should also go down without any problem at this point. After defeating Hung, the codex entry 438 HUNG (Enemies 30/32) is added.

After the boss fight, entries CEO TAHM (Bios 49/50) and CTO DAKYNE (Bios 50/50) are added to the codex, and the mission is completed, unlocking

The next main mission Root Acces follows immediately.

New objectives: Go to deepStink level & Reach lower maintenance levels

To reach the final location of the game we actually need to return to the very start of the game. You can use the elevator to dNexus for a quicker route. Along the way, you will be attacked by normal Ferals and Papa Ferals, in large quantities, but nothing you haven't seen before, and going through them should feel like a hot knife through butter, at least during the first part of the journey.

When you are close to the SI control room (where you talked to Trummer at the start of the game) you can go west a bit to pick up the Rat Bite augmentation behind a locked door (ICE 2). Then go back to the SI control room and take the east door to reach SILO 86 (no codex entry). At the crossroads go southwest through the locked door (ICE 1) to reach an area with a grafter. Here you can pick up an advanced and superior component. Then continue northeast and down the elevator.

New objective: Enter the MenShen facilities

In the first part of this area, you will still be attacked by mainly Feral enemies, but due to the sheer number of them, they can still be dangerous. Don't go too fast and trigger multiple ambushes at once, and you should be alright. I also found that the augmentation Propulsion Leap works very well as crowd control due to its short cooldown duration. In the north part of Silo 86 you can pick up an advanced component and a skill point, and then further to the southeast past some small robot spiders you can pick up a superior component and the minishotgun (or shotminigun) The Dealbreaker.

Continue to the objective and you will start to encounter automated defenses and mechanical enemies, including a mecharachnoid, so switch weapons accordingly. Along the way, you can pick up a couple of advanced components. Prepare for an ambush at the entrance to the MenShen facilities including a siege mech named Gun-Dolph (You shall NOT pass!). Make use of the hackable turrets and your abilities to take the enemies down. Go along the narrow bridge and enter the last discoverable location in the game, Project MenShen, adding the codex entries MENSHEN (Locations 39/39) and PROJECT MENSHEN (Lore 20/20). Discovering this last location unlocks

Entering this location also completes the mission, unlocking

The last main mission Unhandled Exception follows immediately

Unhandled Exception

Unhandled Exception

New objective: Reach the MenShen antechambers & Enter the MenShen testing chamber

Fight your way deeper into the facility and be sure to pick up the superior component (you can't revisit this location after the mission is completed). This area can be quite unforgiving (on normal at least), so take it slow and use cover. Go back a bit to heal if needed. When you reach a huge locked door, nogHead will contact you and he will hack it. This means that you need to stay near this door for around 2 minutes while hordes of enemies attack you from all sides. Just stay crouch behind cover and shoot everything that comes near, and use abilities when they get too close for comfort. Go through the door and heal yourself with some well-placed vending machines, while you mentally prepare yourself for the final boss fight.

New objective: Prevent the MenShen gate from opening

💀 Boss fight: Interdimensional Calamity 💀

Calamity

The boss fight starts easily with just a couple of Ferals and Dakyne attacking. Dakyne must be one of the weakest 'bosses' in the game, as she is down in just a couple of shots. However, the objective of this fight is to stop the Interdimensional Calamity, the tentacle monster from beyond the MenShen gate. This requires accessing four terminals, which sounds easy but isn't. Loads - and I mean loads - of enemies are trying to prevent this from happening.

During the fight, Ferals keep spawning so make sure to keep attacking them and diminish their numbers. When you have some breathing room between enemies, you can go to the first terminal and use it to discharge. This will trigger a new wave of more difficult enemies, so keep moving and take them down as you wait for the next terminal to get ready. Use your abilities on the most powerful enemies and keep going until all non-Feral enemies are defeated and make your way to the next terminal. Again, when the time is right, use the terminal for another discharge and repeat the process.

During the final wave of enemies, you will face UNGRATEFUL MERC (Enemies 31/32), which is also an enemy type I encountered much earlier in the game in previous playthroughs so you may have already encountered this one prior to this. Anyway, once the fourth and final terminal is primed, activate it to close the gate and finish the boss fight.

Defeating INTERDIMENSIONAL CALAMITY (Enemies 32/32) will add its entry to the codex, unlocking

As this is the final missing codex entry in the game, this will also unlock

It has been reported that this achievement now (i.e. in new playthroughs after patch 3) unlocks way earlier in the game, although I am not entirely sure why. Still, I will leave it here as you should unlock it at this point due to its requirements.

After the credits, you are back in Cluster 13 and have completed the last mission, unlocking both

Now that we are done with the main and side mission, let's finish up the last few achievements.
