Heavy counterbalanced putter | Golf Monthly

After some months of tinkering I have finally finished off my heavy counterbalanced putter. It is based on a Yes Sandy belly putter that I bought very cheaply in the January sales. I cut it down in stages to 32" as it still felt a bit clumsy at 35" and 34". To get the swing weight about right at D1, I had to make a steel plug wrapped with lead tape weighing 40 grams, which I glued into the butt end of the shaft. Finished it off with a Super Stroke 1.0 parallel sided putter grip. Shaft diameter at the cut point was about right, so no need to pad it out. The whole thing weighs in at 620 grams, which is somewhat heavier than a standard putter. I have played 2 rounds with it so far and it gives me a very smooth putting stroke. I am pretty deadly with it from 6 feet in, but slightly struggling with getting the distance right on longer putts, hence the odd 3 putt. I think this is just a case of getting used to it. I note that Super Stroke have just come out with a 13" long Claw putter grip weighing 100 grams, which I would have bought if it had been available at the time. :)
