IPL customers are seeing an increase in bill payment scams.
INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Indianapolis Power and Light is reporting an increase in payment scams and sending a warning to all customers to be cautious.
According to the power company, customers have reported receiving calls telling them their service would be terminated unless they immediately send a payment.
IPL suggests calling the local police department's non-emergency number if you receive one of these calls.
There are a few ways to tell if the call may not be legitimate:
- The caller asks for payment via a specific method. IPL offers a variety of payment options, including online, over the phone, in person, by mail and by autopay.
- The caller doesn't offer specific and accurate information about the account.
- The caller does not seem official, but is requesting personal information.
If you receive a call you're concerned about, call IPL at 317-261-8444 for business accounts or 317-261-8222 for residential accounts.
IPL's hope is that customers will spread the word to other vulnerable customers they know.
