The battle between the dub and the sub-version of an anime series has now reached Jujutsu Kaisen, one of the most popular anime series right now. The series is currently going through its second season which focuses on the Shibuya Incident Arc and fans are enjoying the series in both sub and dub versions according to their preference. Although it is normal for English dubs to modify a few elements, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 severely spoils Yuji’s most amusing moment in the Shibuya arc.
As the series is going through an important and serious aspect of the series, the comedic elements are rarely seen in the series. However, the protagonist of the story Yuji Itadori still manages to create an amusing moment with his joyfulness. Though this scene had a lasting impact in the sub-version, the dubbed version could not replicate the same. The change from sub to dub may have affected the relationship between Yuji and Nanami.
English Dub Version Desecrates Nanami and Yuji’s Relationship
When Yuji gets the task of relaying the information about Gojo Satoru being sealed, he chooses to climb up a high building and then shouts Nanami’s name for all of Shibuya to hear. He performs this for a long time while informing everyone about Gojo being sealed. However, while calling for Nanami, Yuji uses the nickname that he gave Nanami and calls him ‘Nanamin’. When the Nanami Team finds him, Megumi slaps Yuji on the back of the head to stop him from yelling. This sequence is humorous since, in the anime, Yuji went ahead and started shouting for him “Na-na-na-na-na-na-min.”
Yuji’s affection for Nanami is reflected in the nickname. Nanami dislikes Yuji addressing him as sensei or Nanami san, therefore Yuji gives him the title to show his appreciation. However, in the English dub, Yuji shouts Nanami rather than Nanamin. Worse, when Nanami arrives to find him, he addresses him as “Kento-dude” in the English dub. This not only undermines the scene’s comic element but also affects Nanami and Yuji’s relationship.
Yuji and Nanami’s Relationship
Gojo Satoru introduced Nanami and Yuji to each other to explore the case of some enigmatic transfigured individuals. They have since worked together occasionally throughout Jujutsu Kaisen and have made an excellent partnership. They pounded the Special-Grade Cursed Spirit, Mahito, into submission and compelled him to flee or face exorcism. Nanami mentors Yuji and shares insights learned along the way. This mentor-student connection fosters Yuji’s progress by providing important insights into the world of jujutsu.
Their bond focuses on concepts of camaraderie and information transmission. They’ve also saved each other’s lives on several occasions. Nanami and Yuji’s relationship is unique and their bond gets stronger as they face dangerous curses further along the way.
