Kias, Hyundais broken into at south Indy apartment complex

INDIANAPOLIS — Residents at Southwood Cooperative Apartments on the south side of Indianapolis woke up to shattered car windows after someone went around Sunday night breaking into the vehicles.

All of these cars have one thing in common — they were Kias or Hyundais.

Kesha Hamilton told 13News when her son was getting ready to leave for work, he saw glass in the back seat of the Hyundai Santa Fe.

"He looked at his car and saw the window was busted out," Hamilton said.

But she said it wasn't just her vehicle — a handful of Kias and Hyundais were broken into at the complex near East Stop 11 Road and South Sherman Drive. One of them, someone was able to get inside and rewire it.

"I was in shock, I was like, 'What? I can't believe this,'" Hamilton said.

Management at Southwood told 13News they are working with their security team and police to investigate. They also said this is the first time this has happened at the complex.

Last year alone in Indianapolis, there were more than 1,100 Kias and almost 1,000 Hyundais stolen. This is because certain models do not have a specific security feature that prevents thefts. Police say people have learned how to break in and steal these cars from social media.

IMPD told 13News they are looking into this incident.
