CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 found out the police officer and his wife facing child pornography charges didn't just have children of their own. A judge gave them custody of another child just a few months ago.
WSOC is told police officer Steven Webb and his wife, Tracy, have three children. In February, a Cabarrus County judge gave them custody of a fourth, their granddaughter. According to the court records, everyone involved -- the Webbs, their son and his girlfriend -- agreed that was for the best. The judge said it "will best promote the welfare of said minor child at this time."
Five months later, the Webbs are behind bars, charged with receiving, possessing and distributing child pornography.
Chris Hoyle dates one of their daughters and said they don't know what to believe, but that the Webbs are not "monsters" or evil people.
"Great parents. Kind of left us in a bad situation for now. But it's, they're really good people," he said.
Still, as far as whether the Webbs are guilty, he said he only knows what he's seen in the media and that he and the Webbs' children are looking for answers and trying to figure out what to do.
Two are older than 18, but one is still a minor. Court papers show their grandmother, Steven Webb's mother, is asking the court for custody since her parents are "unable to provide a safe and stable residence for the minor child" because they're in jail. It's not clear what's next for the Webbs' little granddaughter.
Steven and Tracy Webb are due in federal court Friday for a detention hearing.
