Resistance 4 and Sunset Overdrive 2 Were Two Insomniac Games in Development That Have Since Been Cancelled

The massive Insomniac Games leak revealed a lot of confidential information about the company and its projects, announced and unannounced, as well as some projects that were planned but never saw the light of the day.

The leaks continue to bring new information every day and now a company document has revealed some of the highly anticipated titles were also cancelled. There were several games that the studio internally canceled due to some reasons and the long list includes two sequels of the best Insomniac titles, Sunset Overdrive 2 and Resistance 4.

Sunset Overdrive is one of the best games from Insomniac that was released in 2014, and although the game wasn’t a commercial success, it was loved by many and had its fanbase. Players had been hoping for a sequel of the game for a long time and now the leaked company documents have revealed that the studio had planned for a sequel, but it was canceled due to some reasons. Another popular game that was once in development but was cancelled is Resistance 4.

As per a leaked document, Sunset Overdrive 2 was in development from October 2015 to September 2016 codenamed “Project Ivy“, but it was later shelved presumably for Marvel’s Spider-Man title as it would have been in development at the time. Although there is no mention of Marvel’s Spider-Man, it was the only game that the studio could have been working on.

However, another reason behind the game being shelved could be its not-so-stellar sales and profits as it was an Xbox and PC exclusive and Xbox One wasn’t selling as well as PS4 then. The game sold only 1.9 million copies and grossed a revenue of nearly $50 million with around $42 million in development costs and the studio’s share of the profits was just $567.

Sunset Overdrive did not sell well and was an Xbox exclusive.
SO did not sell well and was an Xbox exclusive. These could have been the reasons behind the cancellation.

There could be one more reason why the studio would have canceled the game as Microsoft has rights for the next two sequels including any DLC expansion, ports, and derivative games. If the game was indeed shelved in favor of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac made the right choice as the game as well as the series has been immensely successful.

Sony officially confirmed that the series has sold over 33 million copies with Marvel’s Spider-Man selling and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 selling over 6 million copies in just two weeks.

Resistance 4 would have been the fourth mainline entry in the popular series that the studio canceled around 2012. There were some reports in 2021 that Insomniac pitched the game to Sony, but it rejected the pitch saying that there were already many post-apocalyptic games in development and the company wasn’t looking to bet on another such game.

Moreover, it was also reported that the game seemed too similar to Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us and it did not want the games competing with each other.

There are some similarities between the two games as the premise of The Last of Us is that a fungus turns people into zombies and aliens in Resistance grew their army by infecting people with a virus. Next up is the setting as the last two games in the Resistance series were set in the post-apocalyptic United States, the same as The Last of Us, so there could be some truth to these reports.

Resistance4 reportedly had a similar premise to The Last of Us.

However, despite all this, if the games had been released, players would have played them anyway since both have been loved by fans and have received mostly positive reviews. But these aren’t the only games that have been shelved to make way for other titles.

According to the leaked documents, Insomniac pitched an online Spider-Man game called Spider-Man: The Great Web and it was also rejected and then cancelled. There is also a mention of a few other games that have been canceled such as Tap Samurai, Winning Hand, Dark Eden, Sandmen, and Kulture.
