As someone who's bought plenty of Japanese games before, and not know Japanese, having to decipher an instruction manual is part of the puzzle.
You should learn Japanese. Playing a video game in a language not your own is great practice. It was you who said, "As someone who's bought plenty of Japanese games before, and not know Japanese, having to decipher an instruction manual is part of the puzzle." I agree. Playing a game in a language not your own enhances the experience (IMHO). Whether one speaks French or not, I believe playing A Plague Tale: Innocence in its original language intensifies the ambience. And a frivolous hobby becomes a disciplined scholarly activity.
