Tampa police arrest man connected to elderly woman death

Antelo Shavonne Simpson, 30, is believed to have been the last person to have seen the woman alive.

TAMPA, Fla. — A 30-year-old man was arrested in connection to the death of an elderly woman who was found dead Wednesday night, according to an update from Tampa police.

Antelo Shavonne Simpson is believed to have been the last person to have seen the woman alive.

The investigation began on Oct. 25 after police were called around 9:48 a.m. to 305 E. Wellington Court about a woman found dead.

The woman, who was in her early 70s, had suffered multiple sharp force injuries, police said in the update. Detectives later learned that the woman had contacted several people, including Simpson, on Oct. 23 after being locked out of her home.

Simpson was arrested around 11:20 p.m. after the woman was found. He has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently in the Orient Road Jail.

"It is heartbreaking to know that a family lost a loved one so tragically," Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement. "Although it cannot replace their loved one, I hope there is a small amount of comfort that the family is able to find in knowing that detectives were able to find closure in less than 24 hours. It is in cases like this one, that show how dedicated our detectives and department are to find justice for the victim and their loved ones as well."
