Taylor Swift's New Commercial Proves the 'Old Taylor' Is Actually Alive and Well

At the end of her new song, "Look What You Made Me Do," Taylor Swift tells her listeners, "I'm sorry, the Old Taylor can't come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, ’cause she's dead." Any confusion fans had about what this meant went away when she released the music video days later. Right before Swift says this line, hundreds of her old personas plunge to their deaths. That's not the only macabre thing that happens: At the beginning of the video, New Zombie Taylor literally buries Old 2015 Met Gala Taylor underground. The pop star's message here is pretty blunt: Her former personality—and everything that came along with it—is gone.

Well, that's what we thought, until we saw her latest commercial. It's an ad for Swift's AT&T channel, Taylor Swift NOW—yes, she has her own channel—and it's perplexing, to say the least. In it, Swift strums her guitar, plays with her cat (Olivia), and eats raw cookie dough out of the fridge, all things that are quintessentially Old Taylor, the Swift who had fans over to her house for baking parties and credited her cats as the reason she was once the most-followed person on Instagram. (Her pal Selena Gomez now holds that title.)

Something tells me New Taylor—with her army of snakes and penchant for rapping—wouldn't be down for a Nestlé Toll House & Chill session with a pack of cats. The images in this commercial and what we've seen from Swift recently are just so…drastically different.

Don't take our word for it, though. Check out the commercial for yourself, below:

Swift also teased this commercial on Instagram. Admittedly, the one of her playing with Olivia is pretty charming:
