Franklin- June 29 - It's not uncommon to see Justina Smith at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin. "I come to visit my daughter. I clean up around her stone."
But this time, she came for a very different reason. "I wanted to come to make sure my daughter's headstone was OK, and all my uncles and grandmas."
Many tombstones were toppled over, knocked down and broken off.
More than a dozen pink flags mark plots that now rest in pieces.
"I think it's young adults and generally these things tend to get solved because people talk," she said.
Someone will have to pay for the work of the vandals one way or another. But a lot of the older tombstones may not have any relatives left to even take care of them.
Many years ago the Greenlawn cemetery closed at sunset. Now, the cemetery is connected to trails so people are in and out of the cemetery at all times. Currently, there is no way to secure the premises.
Police are hopeful they will catch the vandals and the cemetery can remain open.
