Shonda Rhimes is an American television producer, screenwriter, and author. The television medical drama Grey’s Anatomy is Rhimes’ first major television success. In a 2021 Variety article, Rhymes sounded amazed when she said, “I have a 19-year-old who’s in college right now, and when that 19-year-old was strapped to my chest as a baby, I wrote a show, and that show is still on the air.”

She has been a lifelong feminist and proponent of creating strong female characters and a champion for actors of color. It is interesting to note that Grey’s Anatomy created countless jobs for actors of color working in television today. Rhymes recently said, “It’s inspiring to me!” Rhimes recently started working on shows for Netflix, including Bridgerton and several others currently in the works.

You may be interested in the question of where is “Grey’s Anatomy” filmed. While the storytakes place in Seattle, Washington, the bulk of the filming doesn’t actually take place there. Dr. Grey lives in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood. It is a real, affluent neighborhood in northwest Seattle where residents built gorgeous Queen Anne-style houses between 1880 and 1910.

The house pictured in the series as Dr. Grey’s home is a real house in the Queen Anne neighborhood. If you want to recreate a little bit of Dr. Meredith Grey’s life in Seattle, Peerspace has many options.

The hospital where Dr. Grey works is the fictional Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, formerly named Seattle Grace Hospital, in the show. And now we can finally reveal where is “Grey’s Anatomy” filmed. Although the series takes place in Seattle, they primarily film the hospital scenes in Los Angeles.

According to Los Angeles magazine, the Veterans Administration Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center in North Hills, CA, serves as the entrance to Grey-Sloan Memorial. However, they film the interior shots on a soundstage at Prospect Studios in Los Feliz, CA.

The film crew goes to Seattle to film images of the skyline to give the impression that the show takes place in Washington state. They shoot all of the helipad scenes in downtown Seattle.

Time for a drink at Joe’s Bar

An interesting detail in Grey’s Anatomy concerns the after-work hangout spot that’s been the favorite bar for the doctors for 18 seasons. This bar is Joe’s Bar on the show and was actually based on a real bar called McMurphy’s Restaurant and Tavern in Pasadena, CA.

While McMurphy’s closed 10 years ago, it still exists on Grey’s Anatomy because the crew built an exact replica of Joe’s Bar on a soundstage at Prospect Studios in Los Feliz, CA. Ah, the wonders of television!
