Middlebury - Middlebury police say Elkhart County Highway workers found an apparent World War II-era hand grenade in a ditch along a road.
WSBT-TV says the Elkhart police bomb squad got a call to handle the grenade discovery Monday. Police say the fuse, spoon and pin appear to have come from an M30-style training grenade.
Authorities say they shut down the area while they removed the grenade.
Middlebury police say that while the grenade probably was real, it couldn't have exploded because the propellant had been removed.
Police say the fuse was also inert and had probably already had been detonated.
