“You’re so afraid of p*ssing people off”: Kate Winslet Admits Lack of an Intimacy Coordinator Became a Major Problem in Her Early Years as an Actress

It would seem that nudity in film is something that has existed from the very start of Hollywood. Although considered taboo to this date by a big chunk of its audience, there has always been a form of poetic expression to it. Most female celebrities are pressured into it and a majority of them have some or the other negative experience with it. Unfortunately, Kate Winslet is one such actress.

Before the SAG-AFTRA strikes, intimacy coordinators were rarely heard off. A huge majority of projects that had nudity, did not have them at all. After the actors’ strikes, however, things have changed drastically. Winslet spoke on exactly this, stating that looking back, there are times when she wished that she had had one such person by her side when she was doing nude scenes.

Kate Winslet Wished She Has An Intimacy Coordinator By Her Side

An intimacy coordinator is a very important part of the production of a film that has any sort of intimate moments. Be it kissing, on-screen intercourse, or nudity in general, they can be one of the most important forms of communication between actors and production.

They make sure that everyone on set, and especially the people partaking in these acts, are comfortable. Knowing how important their role in a film’s production is, it is concerning to find out that their being a compulsory requirement in Hollywood has come fairly recently.

“I would have benefited from an intimacy coordinator every single time I had to do a love scene or be partially naked or even a kissing scene,” Winslet said. “It would have been nice to have had someone in my corner, because I always had to stand up for myself.”

Kate Winslet recently spoke to The New York Times on this. Looking back at her career, she often wishes that when she was doing intimate scenes, be it nudity or kissing, she would have had an intimacy coordinator with her. She added that it would have been nice for her to have someone voice her queries and boundaries when she, herself, could not.

Kate Winslet Would Have Done Things Differently

Kate Winslet elaborated on what she meant, stating that early into her career, there were a lot of times when she felt too scared to stand up for herself and make her boundaries known. Times where she would have liked certain things to be different; to have fewer people in the room, not have a certain camera angle, be more covered, or simply have her gown closer to her.

Small changes like these would have made a big difference in how comfortable she could have felt, looking back. She added that when one is new in the industry, they often bite their tongue to ‘make it big’ and she believes that an intimacy coordinator could have helped with the overall situation.

“Just little things like that,” Winslet explained. “When you’re young, you’re so afraid of pissing people off or coming across as rude or pathetic because you might need those things. So learning to have a voice for oneself in those environments was very, very hard.”

Such a sentiment, unfortunately, is not unique to Winstel as a lot of actresses are taken advantage of when they are in such a vulnerable position. This is exactly the reason why intimacy coordinators are so necessary to film production.
